چکیده
Abstract We present a detailed evaluation of the turbulence forecast product EDP (Eddy Dissipation Parameter) used at Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). It is based on parameterization scheme TURBDIFF which operational within ICON (Icosahedral Nonhydrostatic) numerical weather prediction model operationally by DWD. For aviation purposes, procedure provides cubic root eddy dissipation rate ε 1/3 as an overall index. This quantity widely measure for intensity experienced aircraft. The includes additional sources turbulent kinetic energy with particular relevance to are briefly introduced. These describe generation subgrid-scale action wake eddies, mountain waves, convection well horizontal shear found close fronts or jet stream. Furthermore, we introduce post-processing, calibration empirical EDR distribution, and demonstrate potential limitations final EDP-based considering several case studies typical events. Finally, reveal forecasting capability this verifying results against one year aircraft in situ measurements from commercial find that forecasted performs favorably when compared Ellrod In particular, signal deep convection, accounted product, advantageous spatial non-locality allowed verification procedure.

An Artificial Intelligence Approach to Operational Aviation Turbulence Forecasting
Turbulence is a major aviation hazard for both commercial and private aircraft. Currently, the clear-air turbulence forecasting tool Graphical Turbulence Guidance (GTG) is used by airline meteorologists and dispatchers for flight planning, and in part to determine operational Airman’s Meteorological Information (AIRMET) turbulence advisories; however, GTG has much higher resolution and intensit...
متن کاملEarthquake forecasting and its verification
No proven method is currently available for the reliable short time prediction of earthquakes (minutes to months). However, it is possible to make probabilistic hazard assessments for earthquake risk. These are primarily based on the association of small earthquakes with future large earthquakes. In this paper we discuss a new approach to earthquake forecasting. This approach is based on a patt...

متن کاملForecasting Energy Value at Risk Using Multiscale Dependence Based Methodology
In this paper, we propose a multiscale dependence-based methodology to analyze the dependence structure and to estimate the downside portfolio risk measures in the energy markets. More specifically, under this methodology, we formulate a new bivariate Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) copula based approach to analyze and model the multiscale dependence structure in the energy markets. The prop...
متن کاملCase Studies: a Security Science Research Methodology
As a relatively new discipline Security Science is searching for academic acceptance very often combining established hard science approaches with those of Social Science and Humanities. Methodologies need to be developed to equip the discipline to conduct more varied research. One such method is the use of the case study approach, as it allows multiple inputs from a variety of sources to build...
